2017 Jamis Dakota Team Mountain Bike Review & Pro, Race Model

2016 Jamis Dakota D29 Team MTB Racing Bike

Jamis Dakota Team Mountain Bike Review

First Impressions

The overall package is very sleek and capable looking for a lightweight XC racing mountain bike with a nice color scheme. This years 2017 Jamis Dakota team mountain bike is plus a 1/2 pound but still comes in at an amazing fighting weight of 20lbs, and is only off 4-6 pounds from a team road bicycle.

Paint & Colors

The black and orange accented frame with the orange fork is tastefully crafted and an excellent representation of a Jamis XC racing mountain bike team model.

Frame Design

This style carbon design has become very popular for lightweight frames.  It comes with all the standard amenities expected of this years model, 1.5 – 1 1/8” tapered head tube, PressFit30 BB shell, High Direct Mount (HDM) front derailleur, 12 x 142 dropouts, replaceable derailleur hanger

Smart cable routing.

Frame Sizes & Geometry

Jamis offers a complete array of sizing for adult riders, men and women as well as larger young adult ridres.

With their smallest size starting at 15″, (this is my choice at 5’7″ as I like smaller frames), they also offer

They also offer a 17″,19″ and 21″ model for the Clydesdale types.

For 2017 the seat angle remains 73 degrees for all frame sizes, which provides a nice balance for climbing while still providing the rider with a great control on the descents.

The head tube across all sizes 70.5 degrees, serious XC racing with an emphasis on climbing over decent.  Of course for those so inclined you can always alter the angle with and adjustable headset which offers a range from .5- 1.5 degrees of adjustment if desired.

The wheel base is almost identical to last years model and these are the wheelbase sizes:

  • 15″ Jamis Dakota Frame – 42.0″ / 1066mm wheelbase
  • 17″ Jamis Dakota Frame – 42.8″ / 1088mm wheelbase
  • 19″ Jamis Dakota Frame – 43.8″ / 1112mm wheelbase
  • 21″ Jamis Dakota Frame – 44.6″ / 1132mm wheelbase

This year also features the 12 x 142 rear thru axle that is now standard with unmatched rear wheel rigidity. A stainless steel chain stay protector is integrated into the frame and important for a carbon frame. A replaceable derailleur hanger, press fit 30 bottom bracket, 1 1/2 – 1 1/8 tapered head tube.  It also comes with internal cable routing and an HDM, high direct mount front derailleur.

Bike Weight

Jamis continues to list their bike weights, in my opinion the sign of a company  that is not scared of its competition or own ability to produce the peak performance machinery.

This one has a claimed weight of  20 lbs., impressive!!! This is a full .5 pound increase over last years model.

Carbon quality

Jamis produces a very high tech state of the art carbon frame. This is how they describe their carbon fiber lay-up process, “The Dyad lay-up schedule employed on our Dakota frames utilizes two different types of high modulus carbon fibers, applied in specific sequences and angles to maximize strength, stiffness and ride quality in the lightest possible package. The Dyad Supreme lay-up on the Team results in a frame that is 20% lighter and 15% stiffer!”.

Parts grouping

All the best here. The Jamis Dakota Team bike is running all SRAM XX1 drivetrain and Shimano XTR brakes.  The cockpit is all Ritchey WCS carbon.

Brakes

This year the brakes are now Shimano XTR M9020 Ice-Tech hydraulic disc, 180mm front & 160mm rear RT-86 Ice-Tech rotors.  The brake rotor size were also increased to the next size up on the front and rear for increased stopping power.

One would have to assume the SRAM XX1 brakes weren’t offering the same performance as the Shimano XTR setup delivers.

Front Suspension

This year the SID is gone, and the team model now includes a Fox 32 Float Step Cast Factory Series 29″ w/2-position remote & Open Mode Adjust, Kashima Coating, 15x110mm axle, air spring compression, rebound adjust, tapered alloy steerer, 100mm travel.

Wheelset

The Jamis Dakota team stays loyal to Stans, but switches to the newer model Stan’s NoTubes Crest MK3 Team 29″ tubeless wheels, Neo Series 32H 15x110mm axle front and 12x142mm rear hubs, Sapim Custom Force spokes.

Bonus on the Sapim spokes as well.

MSRP

$5,999, the same as last year.

Final thoughts

This is a Jamis team model and is the pinnacle of everything XC racing stands for in 2017.  It simply isn’t going to get any better in technology or components.  This after all is their World Cup UCI XC race model slayer.

Pros

For me, the switch to the Shimano XTR brakes is a quality upgrade.  Also this year goes 1×12 and I am excited about this as well.  Fox is really producing some wonderful products and their new factory fork is a proven  podium performer already at the World Cup XC racing level.

Cons

The increase in bike weight by 1/2 pound for sure hits the cons radar.  Most likely this is primarily from the front fork swap and the change over to a 1×12 system.

A bit pricey for the average mortal, but priced comparatively with all the other team mountain bikes.
